Ranking every Best Picture winning film I’ve seen

Mar 19, 2023 by NanoNerd
I’ve only seen a total of 6 films that have won the Oscar for best picture. They are:

Forrest Gump (1994)
Titanic (1997)
Chicago (2002)
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
The Departed (2006)
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) [Finally watched this one last night!!!]

And now, here’s how I’d rank each of them.

6. The Departed

It’s just not my kind of movie. I don’t typically enjoy crime dramas. There are a few exceptions, but the Departed is not one of them. I found myself bored throughout watching this film, and I honestly found it hard to follow. To be honest, this is the only film out of all 6 films on the list that I wasn’t a fan of. This just isn’t the kind of movie that I would enjoy.

5. Chicago

I enjoyed this one for the most part. I watched this for a college class I took where we would watch movies and then write reviews on them (it has so far been by favorite college class out of all the ones I’ve taken). I enjoyed it for the most part. However, when compared to the other films on the list, I just don’t think this film matches up to them.

4. Forrest Gump

This was a fun and emotional movie. I enjoyed watching Forrest do all kinds of things throughout his life. It’s a classic that I love to revisit from time to time, however the remaining 3 films are just a little better in my opinion.

3. Titanic

I got to watch this film a little over a year ago. It was long, but it began to pick up once they hit the iceberg. That was really when I became invested in the film. I knew how things would end between Jack and Rose, but I still felt intense sadness when actually watching it. This film is great, but the reason I wouldn’t rank it higher is because it’s incredibly long, which is what keeps me from rewatching it on my own.

2. The Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King

This film is also incredibly long, but unlike Titanic I actually don’t mind rewatching this one simply because it has a lot of intriguing storylines that I love returning to. The only one that loses me is Aragorn's storyline. I’ve never really cared for his character throughout the Lord of the Rings films. However, I always find myself invested in the storylines of Frodo and Samwise. Their emotional bond is truly the icing on top of the already-rich-in-flavor cake that is the Lord of the Rings.

1. Everything Everywhere All at Once

It might be odd for me to rank this film as #1 even though it hasn’t even been 24 hours since I’ve seen it for the first time (I watched it last night). However, I feel that this was truly one of the most unique films I’ve ever seen. Daniels crams so much into 2 hours, and it’s honestly impossible to NOT be entertained when watching this film. There were so many laughs and emotional moments throughout it that led me to conclude that this film is a true masterpiece.

Tryphena regarding Best Picture winners, I really wanna see the Shape of Water (2017). I’m a fan of Guillermo del Toro but for some reason I still haven’t seen that one.

If we’re talking about films in general and not just Best Picture winners, I’m interested in seeing The Whale from last year. It’s supposed to be really good from what I hear. I love films that are supposed to be gut-wrenching.

I haven't seen Shape of Water either, but I loved Pan's Labyrinth and enjoyed Hellboy too.

And nominees are great too! Some years have just so many good films. I hope The Whale comes on streaming soon.
