a) He was able to put wildings and night of the watch together despite them being arch enemy
b) He was able to defeat the wildwakers
c) He was kind and had a really good concept of justice. He only executed people when needed (i.e. The traitor of Night Watchs, Slynt and Daenerys)
d) He was protective of his family and willing to take huge risks to protect them
e) He was able to rule well unlike every other king or queen of the Seven Kingdoms

He did win though, winning isn't about sitting on the Throne. Winning was breaking the wheel, like Dany said she would do. By killing Dany, he broke the wheel for good.
Plus, Jon belongs in the North. When he rides into Castle Black and sees Ghost, Tormund, he knows hes at home.
