Family is a singular noun, not plural!  So it is, in fact, was.

My family was right.
My mom and dad were right.

Just lettin' ya know the logic behind it. :P
Sent by Insanity,Mar 23, 2013

were
Sent by Vitamin,Mar 23, 2013
it's was, why is this up or debate????
Sent by moup94,Mar 23, 2013
It's a collective noun, so it can be singular or plural depending on the context. Usually it's was, though.
Sent by Qwerty3000,Mar 23, 2013
It depends on the way that you use the word' family'. As well as the tense of the sentence.

So, ultimately, both are correct. Regardless of nationality...
Sent by Carlisle,Mar 23, 2013
In that sentence, 'was' is correct.
Sent by 1Swampy8,Mar 23, 2013
WERE.
'Family' is a collective term, therefore it is considered plaural in this scenario. Were is correct.
Sent by PrincessTeePee,Mar 23, 2013
its was omg yall are retarded
Sent by salmaan,Mar 23, 2013
I would say was. :/
Sent by ToughNubbs,Mar 23, 2013
Were, implies they're not right anymore.

You were a giant douche, but not anymore.
Sent by Zedd,Mar 23, 2013
was. Family is singular. It would be were if it was families

The answer is, "My family was right. I have seen the real side of you."

Oh, and I'm British and I say "was" as it's correct.

Was
Sent by greenrocker05,Mar 23, 2013
Were is incorrect, it sounds right to most British people because it's cultural. Same as people saying things like "I didn't take nothing". It's wrong, but it sounds right cause it's so commonly said in our culture.

Sent by Zedd ,Mar 23, 2013

Counter example : You were a giant douche tonight.
This does not imply that he's still not a douche now. XD
Sent by Ryker,Mar 23, 2013

Sent by jacco,Mar 23, 2013

Sent by Tepr,Mar 24, 2013
i would use "was" if i was talking in regards my own personal theory/opinion!
Sent by Tepr,Mar 24, 2013
Family is a singular noun, not plural!  So it is, in fact, was.

My family was right.
My mom and dad were right. :))))
Sent by Gemini,Mar 24, 2013
Well, first of all, that's a run-on sentence.

The correct usage of such a thought would be: "My family was right; I've seen the real 'you'".
Sent by Voice,Mar 24, 2013
was and I've. and yeah, Voice is right. ^
Sent by remorawr,Mar 24, 2013
Was, and I've. Voice is correct too ^^
so is the concept of insanity since family is a collective noun. if it said "family members" were. :)
Sent by 1Mimi1,Mar 24, 2013
czech says were :D
Sent by xxxOndra,Mar 24, 2013
As Family is single(one) we use was and if it is plural, more than one like families -use were,
Sent by aksp53,Mar 24, 2013
Both Brits and Americans should say was because it's singular..
ONE family

Sent by Zedd,Mar 23, 2013

Eww since when does saying "I didn't take nothing" sound right anywhere. People who speak like that didn't pay very good attention in English class.
Sent by HelenCoops,Mar 24, 2013
Its= it's.

Glad I could help, kellyt210 ;)
