Question...

Jun 1, 2020 by Jaybirdnifty
So, can someone explain something to me? I'm a big fan of the game series Danganronpa and have played/watched the games multiple times (although I never finished the third one). But...In one of the games, a character who had pretending to be a female turned out to have the body of a male. And this was after their death.

When the rest of the people found out that this character was physically a male, they started calling the character a 'he' in every conversation instead. Now, the backstory DOES show that the character identified as a male...But the people didn't KNOW his backstory until the end of that 'chapter' and they started calling the character by male pronouns the moment they found out.

Isn't that a bit controversial? Like...Yes, they only 'knew' him for like two weeks...But I feel like it was kind of disrespectful to do that after the character's death. I still support the game series and love the game themselves, but I'm curious to know if anyone else (whether they're fans or not) find the fact that the cast was so quick to change the pronouns after that character's death a bit disrespectful or odd. Or is this just a me thing? XD

They genuinely believed that the character was female at first, hence using feminine pronouns. Later seeing that the character was male, they began using masculine ones.

i think the writers wrote the other characters conversations with the backstory in mind and tried to be respectful of chihiro's real identity
now im hazy on the details of when they actually found out his full backstory but yeah, that's how i took it.

Although now that i think about it, the first time i watched it i was confused in the same way and thought it might be disrespectful until i found out the whole story...

In response to your statement Loop, that's the thing. They didn't KNOW that the character considered himself a male still. They spent all this time around them with that character referring to themselves as a female. How do they know the character wasn't transgender? The writers didn't reveal the bullying/reason until after the trial was already over. To me it just seemed odd that they were so quick to go from female pronouns to male pronouns for their dead classmate when said classmate never stated that they considered themselves a male to anyone except one of them.

And Bix, they found out about the backstory after the tribal. And from the gender reveal to the back story reveal, they kept calling the character a 'he'. For me I feel like the writers should have written them saying female pronouns still to respect the character until it's revealed, OR have half of the cast refer to them as male and the other half as female to show how they are all on different sides of the fence. It was just a weird scenario to me. And the writers could have fixed this easily by having Monokuma reveal the backstory immediately after the gender reveal, but instead waited until the class trial was over.
