MK: Sonya Blade

Jan 11, 2019 by Jaybirdnifty
imageSo very few people might not know this, but Sonya Blade for the longest time was my favorite female character in the Mortal Kombat series. Two more ended up taking the spots for different reasons, although Sonya IS the character I play as the most currently. So here's a bit of background on Sonya.

So here's a history lesson about Sonya:

In the Original Timeline, Sonya I'm pretty sure is the only person in Mortal Kombat 1 to not even mean to join the tournament. Sonya and her special forces team was chasing Kano (Sonya's main rival throughout the games) and Sonya and her team accidentally stumbled onto the ship with him where the competitors where being taken. Sonya's team was then kidnapped, and unknown to her they were killed by Shang Tsung. Not telling Sonya this though, Shang Tsung blackmailed Sonya into competing by saying that if she wanted to free her team she must compete...It was then that she learned about the tournament and how Earthrealm has lost the last 9 of them too Outworld, and if they wanted to keep Earthrealm safe then Earthrealm needed to win this tournament since the rules state that if they lose 10 in a row then Earthrealm can be merged with Outworld. It wasn't until after that she found out her team had already been killed. Liu Kang manages to win the tournament.

In Mortal Kombat 2, Sonya is being held prisoner by Shao Kahn (the ruler of outworld). Therefore, she isn't playable. Her partner, Jax, however debuts in this game and tries to save her.

In Mortal Kombat 3 Jax and Sonya return to Earth Realm and attempts to tell the United States government about their findings and how they needed to prepare for an invasion. The two were ignored. Shao Kahn then invaded Earthrealm, and stripped the souls of most of the world besides a few chosen warriors. Sonya and Kano were two of these people. Sonya and Kano battled upon a skyscraper and as Kano was advancing towards her to finish her off, Sonya suddenly sprung forward and caught him with her leg grab and sent him flying over the building.

In Mortal Kombat 4, Sonya became a member of Earth's own Outer World Investigation Agency and kept crossing paths with The Black Dragon (the gang that Kano was apart of). The last remaining member, Jarek, was also in the game and fled to Edenia. Sonya followed him there, and helped Raiden and the other Earthrealm warriors to keep Edenia safe from Shinnok (a fallen God).

In MK: Deadly Alliance she was searching for two of her Special Forces allies Kenshi and Cyrax and was killed when fighting with the Deadly Alliance (Shang Tsung and Quan Chi) along with many of her allies.

In Mortal Kombat: Deception she (along with her allies who were killed in the previous game) was brought back to life by Onaga in an attempt to use them as his minions. Onaga, being the best necromancer in the world, was able to bring people back to life and control them while keeping their bodies and spirits the same. Unlike Quan Chi.

In Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, Sonya was ripped apart by an unkown opponent when the Forces of Light fought against the Forces of Darkness.

In the reboot the events up until the third game Raiden sends visions of the future to his past side when the Forces of Light were about to lose to the Forces of Darkness. The events up till the third game are still mostly true, where at the end of the third game all of the 'good guys' are killed except Sonya, Johnny Cage, Liu Kang, and Raiden due to the latter's mistakes. Quan Chi brings them back from the dead as Revenants. The MK wiki describes them as "beings who has previously died only to be resurrected as an inhuman warrior and/or an evil spirit."

Sonya has a child with Johnny named Cassie Cage, and gets married to Johnny. However, Sonya's dedication to her job has gotten in the way of their relationship causing the two of them to divorce. Sonya has always been hard on Cassie (who in Mortal Kombat X joins the Special Forces like her parents have at this point) and lacks being able to show anything other then a commander attitude towards her daughter until the end of the game.

Random Facts:
1. Sonya and Frost apparently hate each other, having fought each other the first time they ever met even before Frost betrayed Sub-Zero. In Armageddon, you can even see them fighting in the background whenever Kung Lao is fighting Baraka. It is presummed that Sonya killed Frost due to that being the last time you see Frost.
2. In the Original series Sonya joined the tournament to save her team while her superior (Jax) was still in Earthrealm. In the reboot, however, Sonya goes to Outworld in order to save Jax while her team supposedly was never kidnapped. Not sure if this was a mistake, or just lazy writing since everything should have been EXACTLY the same since these events happened before Raiden got his visions.
3. Sonya was actually not supposed to be in the first game, and instead Kurtis Stryker (who debuted in MK: 3) was. HOWEVER during this time Jax was called Kurtis Stryker, but in MK: 2 they changed Jax's name since they didn't think Kurtis fit him. However, Ed Boon wanted to have a female character in the first game so they took Jax out and replaced him with Sonya.
4. In the Mortal Kombat movie, Sonya was originally supposed to fight Jade as well but they cut her fight in order to make the movie shorter.
5. Despite supposedly 'loving' Sonya as seen in a few of his endings, Johnny Cage pushes Sonya off of the temple in Armageddon's intro when he could have easily just ran past her.

Personal Opinions:
1. Sonya Blade was my only favorite character all the way up until Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance where she and another favorite of mine was tied for first. Then the other passed her in Mortal Kombat: Deception.
2. My favorite costume of hers was her Mortal Kombat 4 Costume...Yet Mortal Kombat decided not to recreate that like they've done for many of the characters in Mortal Kombat reboot.
3. I've never been a fan of the Jax and Sonya partnership. I feel like for someone like Sonya, having Kurtis Styker (who is seen more of a funny guy) would work better for her then having two people who are kind of hard asses.

So what do you think about Sonya? + it if you like her, - if you don't!
