Welcome to your tenth week of Insanity’s Song Contest. This contest has been testing your music tastes, and how they can change and evolve depending on the category. A ton of your favorite artists have changed and evolved their sound throughout their careers as well, and for this week, we’re going to celebrate that. This category is all about evolving as an artist, and here’s how it will work. You will be sending TWO songs this week, and they both must be from the same artist (you can submit songs w/featured artists but the main artist has to be the same for both songs). The first song you send should be a song from an early time in their career. You don’t necessarily need to submit the first song they ever released, or the first song that became a hit on the charts, but just a good song from an earlier stage in their career when they were just getting started as an artist. The second song you submit will be a song that showcases their growth as an artist. This does not need to be the last song they’ve released, but it should be something fairly recent, and it should be a song that shows how they’ve changed musically. Maybe your artist has improved vocally, or has changed up their production quite a bit from when they first started. Think of the second song as a glow up compared to when they first started. I am not requiring a write up for why you have chosen the artist and songs you will inevitably go with this week, but I think they would certainly be helpful, especially if I’m not familiar with the artist you have gone with.

Now I’m sure a lot of you sent your favorite artists early, and you all have played ball with the no repeating artists rule I instilled a while back. I am pleased to announce that from now until the game is over, the repeating artists rule is NULL AND VOID. Submit whoever you want for this category, I really don’t care. I’m not even gonna be hard on y’all if you send a repeat artist this week, because if there was ever a time to repeat one of your favs you may have sent early on, I think this is a good time to do it. The only stipulation I will put into place is that no two contestants may submit the same artist this week. Artists will be claimed on a first come first serve basis, and you can only claim an artist once you have submitted both songs for this category. Furthermore, you are still not allowed to submit any other songs any contestant has submitted for a previous round.

Now there is one final twist to this week, and it will involve how you are judged and scored on the chart this week (which btw is finally DONE, and will be posted at the bottom of this blog). This week, you will be going head to head with one of your competitors. You have been random.org’d into groups of two, and they are as follows:

Group 1: FromAWindow vs. Turkeylover
Group 2: LovelyKiss vs. Mathboy9
Group 3: ManniBoi vs. Irelia

The first song you submit (early career song) will be going head to head against your opponent’s first song. If your first song is better than your opponent’s, you will be placed into a winners round, and your second song (later career song) will be judged against the other winning contestants’ second songs. The best song out of the winners group will be deemed the winner of the week. If your first song is worse than your opponent’s, you will be placed into a losers round, and the second song will be your redemption song to stay in the competition. The contestant from the losers round who has the worst song will be eliminated from the competition. There is a lot at stake here, but at the end of the day there are two chances to really impress me, and I want you to really show me what you’ve got.

Your songs are due 24 hours from now (Wednesday, January 6th @ 11:00AM-ish EST). Failure to submit songs will result in a disqualification, and even though it’s been a minute since y’all have competed, I would still like to see this contest played out until the end. Best of luck out there!

TL;DR Version

- Submit two songs from the same artist that shows their evolution as an artist. The first song should be from where they first started, and the second song should show where they are now. Explanations are not required, but certainly could be helpful this week.
- The no repeating artists rule is cancelled for the rest of the season, but you can not submit the same artist that someone else has already sent this round.
- The first song will only be judged against one other opponent (see above for pairings). If your first song is better than theirs, your second song will determine whether you have won this week. If your first song is worse than theirs, your second song will determine whether you are safe or eliminated.

I know it’s a bit of a risk for the second song to be as slow and emotional as it is, but I feel like these two songs really tell a story. Kelly Clarkson is an artist with such a deeply haunted past that it really unleashed in her early music, but years passed and she grew not only as an artist but as a person and she released “piece by piece” as a way to remedy the past she had with her dad. The first song is so good to blast when you’re angry and/or want to feel like a bad ass and the second song is good for when you need to heal. I love these two and I FUCKING love Kelly clarkson!

When you talk about an evolution of music you have to include Miss Swift. The girl went from country, to pop, to dipping her toes into hip hop at one point. She gives us a new era every time she drops an album and hardly disappoints. Im not the biggest Taylor fan let alone stan but the girl has hits on top of hits from "Teardrops On My Guitar" which was her first hit to her latest "Willow" you can see the changes and transitions she underwent to where she is now.

went from talking about blacking out sucking cock produced by her abuser to writing and slaying a song calling him out and overcoming the struggle !

boa was one of the most successful pop artists of the early 2000s and is credited with being the first korean artist to cross over to japan, paving the way for the hallyu boom. still shes constantly overlooked because she didn't expand into the west. despite this, she has an illustrious discography that rivals the greats of her time. no.1 is very reminiscent of britney/nsync productions of its time but boa really sells it and creates an fun bop that perfectly enscapulates the era

better shows how, 18 years later, she's still on top of her game. she has much more creative control now, being that she's in an executive position in sm entertainment, so she has more freedom to create an innovative pop songs like better! her album was kinda AOTY 2020 so i highly recommend

artist - my name is kay/goldilox (she has had like 2636276272 stage names so yeah)

song 1 - My Name Is Kay

Here's the very 2011 sounding title track from her first ever ep (that im aware of)!

song 2 - Sex Paranoia

about 7 years later, she ditches the whole kay name for a cute and chic name and completely changes her sound!!

~

for this round, i wanted to show goldilox's growth, duh! she started off in 2011 and gave us very 2011 sounding bops!! and then after a few years, she completely changes her sound to something unique and amazing !!

Irelia has messaged me prior to the deadline that she knows what songs she will be posting, I just have to wait until she gets out of work. An extension has been granted for her.

when i think of growth, i think of one of my personal absolute FAVOURITE artists, ms marina!
i have adored marina ever since i first heard her when she released 'the family jewels' in 2010, when i was 12, and still to this day. a decade of stanning.

starting with a bop from her debut album, which i think perfectly captures the marina of that era - loud, proud, bright <3

ideally i would have also liked to have submitted her 2020 release 'man's world' as a kind of full journey sweep ... but after consulting your EXTREMELY helpful new chart, i saw this is not an option. so i will submit from her latest album, love and fear (2018)

i think overall, her tone, pitch, voice etc has improved immensely and her aesthetic has changed majorly (electra heart is dead, dropping the diamonds from her stage name), but her message has remained constant. amen x
