Welcome to your ninth judging panel. Before we begin, I just want to let you all know that at this point, these decisions are getting more and more difficult. We’ve been together for so long, and unfortunately, it’s time for one of you to say goodbye. Here are your critiques
Ava Max is one of those artists that simply exists for me. Her songs are average at best, and this song is no exception. I do think that her voice sounds lovely in this track, and the chorus is admittedly catchy, but it’s pretty repetitive. Like the chorus plays three times after a minute and a half... like that’s a lil excessive Miss Max. This song has moments where it feels like it’s going to build up to something really powerful, but there’s really no pay off in the end. I really do not find anything about this song that really captivated me other than the chorus.
I really enjoyed a lot of tracks from Cuz I Love You, and “Like A Girl” is definitely one of them. I love the beat the song has and the energy that Lizzo brings to this track. Her strong vocals really help drive this song. What I love most about this song though is the message she sings about being able to be successful as a woman. I love how empowering and validating this song is for all women. Stellar.
It’s been such a long time since I’ve heard this song, but I remember when it was inescapable on radio. The rap sections are honestly pretty decent, and they actually add a ton of substance to a song that wouldn’t really have a lot otherwise. The chorus is fine, but it’s probably my least favorite part of the song if I’m being honest. It just doesn’t really stand out compared to the verses. I do think this song tells a narrative that a lot of people can relate to, especially with the year we had. You took a really interesting approach to this challenge that no one else really went for, so I applaud you for that.
Joanne is one of Lady Gaga’s albums that I’ve never actually listened to from start to finish. Don’t come for me if you’re a mega fan or anything! That being said, I really enjoyed this song. I wasn’t expecting this masturbation anthem for this category, but I think with the year we’ve had it certainly has its place. Gaga’s vocals will always sound incredible no matter where she is. She really does have the range. The beat was really interesting, and the song itself progressed really well. I have no complaints tbh, this was very good.
Marina is one of those artists where I feel like I really have to concentrate on the lyrics and the message to fully appreciate her, especially with politically charged songs like this one. I love Marina’s vocals, they always feel so ethereal and dreamy. The actual song was FINE, but I feel like this is a song more to spread awareness on a topic rather than something to listen to for the music. I actually haven’t listened to this yet, but I think this song is a grower for me. After a few listens I think I will appreciate it more, but it’s simply fine for me. Out of everyone’s songs, this is probably the song I would be least likely to listen to on NYE, only because I wouldn’t wanna spend my last minutes of 2020 listening to something political after the tumultuous year we’ve had.
As soon as I heard this beat I had to look up what year this was released, because the beat gives me huge early 00s vibes. Okay 1998 whatever close enough. The beat slayed, I loved that high pitched synth beat that was present throughout the song. If I’m being quite honest, I wasn’t really impressed by the vocals in this song. They were very high pitched, and the vibe is quite laid back that I think they could’ve gotten away with singing an octave lower. The bridge section took me out though LMAO. I appreciate you giving us a bit of culture this week, but this song wasn’t one of my favorites I’m afraid.
LMAO thanks for reminding me this masterpiece of a song existed. If I’m being quite honest this song aged like unpasteurized milk. I couldn’t listen to this song unironically in 2021 anymore, but for this category I could totally see someone enjoying this for the occasion. The verses I really could take or leave, but the chorus is always such a serve. I remember there was a time in my life where I was absolutely living for this song, but that time is long gone. Still, I’ll never forget singing about how I was “getting slizzard” when I was 14, so thank you for that.
