Survivor Maryland All-Stars Ep. 1 Recap (PART 2)

Alright, continuing from my previous blog: https://tengaged.com/blog/Cmack311/8544688/survivor-maryland-all-stars-ep-1-recap-part-1

Now, we’ve seen who all the players are, and we kind of got that knowledge about 2 years ago when we first watched the trailer for All-Stars. One of the more intriguing concepts with this game is the “secret pairs” twist. If you aren’t aware of what is up for grabs, we get the information that if only one pair remains at the Final 9(or earlier), those 2 players get 2 rounds of safety in the game. If they become the lone pair after that point, they get lesser things (maybe one round of safety and an advantage, or one of either, depending on how late they really become the last pair).

The pairs are as follows:

Victoria/Chris T
Siona/Evan: “Aw, I was already mean to that kid”-Siona
Shannon/Eric
Michelle/Brandon: Oh the irony that she got paired with the guy that got rid of her last time
Nicole/Ryan: That laugh from hell
Rebecca/Alex G
Sabrina/Schuble: In my opinion, one of the most dangerous pairs in the season
Ashley/Alex P
Sierra/Micah
Holli/Chris L: “Are you _____ kidding me?”-Holli. Probably another very dangerous pairing in my opinion

So, I really think all 10 pairs are great. I do think that at least 6 of them could end up as a disaster by the end of the pre-merge. I do think some of the underrated players have a bit of an advantage because this twist forces them to align with someone else, so in a way it kind of helps Sierra to have an alliance with Micah, who was relatively good during his season. Rebecca/Alex G seem like one of those UTR pairs that nobody will see for a while and it might be good enough for them to be the last pair standing.

The idea of a Chris L/Shannon/Eric/Holli alliance did come up during the episode, whether or not it happens has yet to be determined. Sabrina/Schuble to me seems like one of, if not the most dangerous pair in the game. Schuble’s social game clearly is on point, and Sabrina is such an underestimated player this time around, they might do a lot of damage in the game together.

Onto the first challenge. Of course dominoes is the opener, of course it is! One thing I really like about these homemade versions of Survivor is that they have to use basic household things for challenges, like stale chicken fingers or the dominoes. One thing I really enjoyed about this challenge wasn’t really the challenge itself, but the passion everyone showed during it. As close as it was during the balance beam and the domino portion, you could see the emotion among everyone as the challenge came to an end. I actually had to rewatch that finish alone in super slow motion just to be sure of who won (it was the girls for sure). Nothing like a photo finish like that for the opening challenge of the All-Star game.

Now, going to the men’s tribal...I was really amazed at how well everyone seemed to get along with each other, despite the potential for some bad blood from prior seasons (Chris L and Ryan to be specific). Also, seeing how Alex P was kind of bitter yet forgiving to Schuble for voting out his brother way back in s1. One of the most unique parts of this kind of season is that some people have really good friends/other relatives that played in early seasons and now they get to play against some of their friend’s foes from those games.

So, in regards to tribal itself, I believed that going in, it was between 3 people: Ryan, Alex P, and Brandon. My gut was telling me Ryan would leave 7-3 or 8-2 or that there would be a massive blindside and Alex P would get the boot. As the votes were cast, Alex G said “There can only be one” in terms of people named Alex. I knew right when he said that, Alex P is going home.

Austin then began his reading of the votes (like how at least this first episode, we get to see the names on the paper as he reads them), and one by one, Alex P sees his name, offering up my favorite quote of the episode “You spelled my name wrong, assholes”.

Overall, a very solid premiere episode. Sometimes the long waits for these shows are worth it when you see how much time has been invested in it. And I know that Austin has been editing this stuff for quite some time now(I think he started around November 2016?) with over 300 hours of footage...which just in case you’re wondering Austin( titan24maniac), I wouldn’t mind seeing all of that footage at the conclusion of the season!
