My grandfather, John Malcolm Cameron, was born on April 9, 1920 in Medicine Hat, Alberta, died June 25, 1997, and was a veteran of World War II. In 1941, Grandpa Cameron joined the Armed Forces in Lethbridge, Alberta and helped make up the 39th Battery of the Field Artillery. He also took basic training at Camrose, Alberta before going to Petawa, Ontario by way of the West Coast.
In June 1942, my Grandpa Cameron began training for overseas and eventually transferred to the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Winnepeg. While in that unit, Grandpa Cameron ended up going off to France, walking nearly across all of it, Belgium, and Holland, eventually becoming wounded outside of Groesbek, Holland. After time in Britain to heal, Grandpa Cameron went back to his unit in Holland in time to help the forces push their way into Germany. The unit was in Oldenburg, Germany when they heard the war was over and they moved on to Nordem Germany.
Even though Grandpa Cameron also volunteered for Japan in 1944, the war ended before he was shipped out. Ultimately, Grandpa Cameron was discharged in 1945 and during his service, he earned the following medals:
-Canadian Volunteer Service Medal.
-War Medal.
-Clasp to the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal.
-1939-45 Star.
-France and Germany Star.
-Defence Medal.
For the record, my maternal grandfather also served in World War II, but I don't know much about him. For more information on him, Martha Campbell Nickle would be the person to ask.
