What is with girls and tanning?

Okay I am a girls who can get tan quick, but doesn't use tanning beds in the winter. So why do some girls do that? Then it just looks fake, like they do actually go to tanning beds. And that isn't even healthy! So why do people tan in winter? That is when you are suppose to be your whitest!
