I was in fact a part of American idol the year Maddie poppie won gross
If anyone wants to know here’s the story
So you don’t actually just show right up and sing for the judges. I showed up at a cattle call opening that year and there was so many people. I mean so many. I got there around 5am and didn’t move in the line until 1pm. Eventually I got up to a line that had a producer and they ask you to sing acapella for 1 minute. If you get past that (which I did) they sent me to a separate room with a group of about 20 people. They asked us to sing together and cut us down to 10 of which people stood out to them (I was top 10). Following this we had to wait until about 3pm to go in front of even more producers so they could decide whether or not we made it to go see the judges. At that point they told me that they were going to send me through to the judges, but here’s what they told me. “You’re voice is there but you do not have a unique style, so we don’t think you’re the right fit for this season, we recommend changing your look and coming back next year”

oh, what the hell? The casting process sounds really flawed in my opinion! Its a singing competition, not anything about a "look"
Unfortunately these days you either need to have a sob story or have a good personality for these shows. Talent never works on TV. You're better off at pursuing your own career.
