Non-Spoiler Review for Total Drama Presents: The Ridonculous Race Episodes One through Six

Sep 6, 2015 by AlmightyOZ
So this is a spoiler-free review of the first six episodes of Total Drama Presents: The Ridonculous Race. I'm tagging some of my friends (since I don't know which of you are Total Drama fans and which aren't) and starting tomorrow I'll be posting full reviews for each episode after they air. If you want to be on the permanent tag list starting tomorrow, PYN in the comments (even if you're on the tag list right now because I'm getting rid of that tomorrow).

OK now that that boring stuff is out of the way, let's get to the review. I will mention the episode titles and locations for the episodes, but beyond that I won't spoil anything. No eliminations, no placements, and only vague references to character development (for example mentioning that a certain team grows over the episodes). Let's begin.

I'm happy to say that this is without a doubt the best season since Island. I know it's a spin off but screw that I'm calling it season seven and no one is going to stop me! I've only watched the first six episodes so who knows... Maybe it will even beat out Island in the end. I'll discuss why this is the case at the end, when I give the Great, the Good, and the Bad (the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is not applicable since there really is not anything ugly yet).

Let's talk about the episodes.

None Down, Eighteen to Go (Part One): This episode was leaked a few months ago and I've watched at least half a dozen times since. It's probably the fifth weakest episode of the six episodes that have been released and that's saying something because it's still really good. The teams are introduced (Jesus Christ there's eighteen fucking teams!) and the challenges lead them around Toronto and the CN tower. I'm not counting this as a spoiler since its in the title, but no one gets eliminated at the end. Plus we're back to twenty-six episode seasons! The editing is a bit off in this episode, with some teams getting shafted, but it's a good premiere and renews hope for all Total Drama fans, even those that quit after All-Stars.

None Down, Eighteen to Go (Part Two): The fourth best of the bunch. The teams travel to Morocco and as I learned more about the different types of challenges, I was amazed at the care that was given in acting like this was the Amazing Race. I mean, even the penalties for ignoring the directions on the "Tips" (Route Infos) is pretty damn accurate. The editing is still a bit off but several of the teams that are shafted this time around got a lot of screen time in episode one so I'm fine with that. I was worried there would only be one challenge in every episode, but my fears were put to rest when there were three in the episode! Three! Total Drama All-Stars would have a heart attack out of jealousy after viewing five minutes of this.

French is an Eiffel Language: We're off to France with the teams in my third favorite episode of the six. This episode has great challenges and some good character development. The editing is pretty even and I've gotta say that I actually laughed once or twice, which is a rarity for me since Island. Not much else to say without spoiling everything, so let's move on to...

Mediterranean Homesick Blues: Easily my least favorite of the bunch. The challenges in the south of France just feel off and well, not very French... The pacing and editing are even, but it just kinda feels like this episode is there. The teams do end up in Iceland at the end, so there is that.

Bjorken Telephone: The best episode of Total Drama in years in my opinion. The challenge is great, several teams go through character development, the editing is even, and the jokes are funny. This is a perfect example of what Total Drama should be, and I'm already looking forward to watching this again on Thursday so I can do my full review.

Brazilian Pain Forest: Slightly lower than the previous episode, but still a shining example of what Total Drama can and should be. The only reason I don't like this episode quite as much as Bjorken Telephone is because there is a bit of character derailment, although it is justified and very hilarious. The end of this episode left me excited for more and totally changed which teams I was rooting for.

Okay, let's move on to the teams. I'm going to rank them from worst to best. Once again, I'll go into more detail starting tomorrow once I feel comfortable discussing the episodes in their entirely.

18. Ellody and Mary (Geniuses): It doesn't help that one of them sound exactly like Courtney, but I had high hopes for this team after watching the leaked episode. After watching all six of these, I've come to the conclusion that they are mostly forgettable and just thrown in to round out the cast.

17. Rock and Spud (Rockers): Spud sounds like Noah on helium and it's awesome. This is a filler team with not much substance and a boring, overused stereotype to boot. Lame. Next!

16. Leonard and Tammy (LARPers): I was kinda in love with Leonard back when Pahkitew Island aired. Basically this season he's exactly the same, so your opinion of him won't really change. And Tammy's just a fatter, whiter, female version of him with a deeper voice. I love him for what he is, but's he's honestly just filler.

15. Emma and Kitty (Sisters): See we're supposed to root for Kit since her sister is a bitchy college kid, but I don't. I actually don't give a shit about either of them. I mean, I guess they're Asian, so diversity! Yay!

14. Chet and Lorenzo (Stepbrothers): OTTN's are a dime a dozen... One pre-rec is that they've gotta be at least a bit unique. These two just argue about nothing and aren't all that funny.

13. Stephanie and Ryan (Daters): The last of the teams I'm not super attached to. I can't really explain why without going into spoiler territory, but wow... I did not expect what happened to happen. I do like Ryan's voice though, and I think it's funny that they are basically a black parody of Brenchel from Big Brother and the Amazing Race.

12. Kelly and Taylor (Mother and Daughter): Kelly is such an OTTN goddess. They're also basically Missy and Baylor... But the mom is useless so I can't really rate them any higher...

11. Sanders and McArthur (Police Cadets): MacArthur is fucking insane! In a good way though. The good cop versus bad cop thing gets old but they're pretty funny. Plus dat yoga joke tho...

10. Jacques and Josee (Ice Dancers): One of the best gimmick pairs in my opinion. I love how Josee is the brains and Jacques can't see it because he's too busy being a stereotypical gay European. They're pretty funny and I love their accents!

9. Carrie and Devin (Best Friends): Everyone knows everything about these two already... I had high hopes for them going in but without spoiling anything I have to say I was a bit surprised at the editing that was given the them...

8. Dwayne and Dwayne Jr. (Father and Son): It's kinda hard to tell for a while which one is the dick and which one has to put up with the dick. Dwayne is a sexist which is really funny. I would say that this team grows as a pair in terms of character development.

7. Geoff and Brody (Surfer Dudes): Good news: Geoff is back to how he was in Total Drama Island and then some. They're the team that pulls off the physical pain gags the best, and I found myself enjoying them more than I expected to.

6. Jay and Mickey (Adversity Twins): I like these two a lot more than most people do, even if they are Cameron clones. They're humor is very funny and I'm pretty sure at one point in the confessional they said that they believed that they were probably just going to go die soon lol.

5. Owen and Noah (Reality TV Pros): Owen is much better than I thought he would be for a fourth go round, and Noah is pretty funny. Not quite as good as in Total Drama World Tour perhaps, but I appreciate the clear fan service none the less.

4. Laurie and Miles (Vegans): These two are really funny and I found myself liking them much more than I thought I would. That's probably because I didn't really understand their purpose in the pilot, but now that I do they're hilarious!

3. Tom and Jen (Fashion Bloggers): The perfect example of what OTTM should be. I laughed at every one of their jokes and the fact that they are named after the creators doesn't hurt them either. Clear fodder, but funny fodder.

2. Gerry and Pete (Tennis Pros): I love the whole idea of two old guys arguing in a friendly way so much that they forget to pay attention to the race. It's executed so perfectly!

1. Crimson and Ennui (Goths): Simply perfect... And if you've written them off without seeing more than the pilot let me just tell you... They are the best!

Alrighty... Getting a bit long here... So let's finish it up with the Great, the Good, and Bad.

Great:
Animation and Voice acting is great as usual
Nice homage to TAR
Good challenges and locations
Very early character development
Don is really good! I like him more than Chris!
Twenty-six episodes! *orgasms*

Good:
Nice mix of fodder and OTT stereotypes
Good theme song
Not much character derailment... Yet

Bad:
The editing is a bit off in the first two episodes... But still better than what show usually does
A bit of character derailment, but still justified and funny
I miss Chef Hatchet :(

So remember to PYN for the episode by episode breakdown that starts tomorrow. See ya then!

TL;DR: Read the Great, Good, and Bad points.
