My Eurovision 2018 Ranking for the Semi-Finals (AQs)

May 3, 2018 by Alexeh23
Hi! As ESC gets excitingly closer, I thought I'd try to actually finish a list like this and post my rankings by semi final for this year. I know I made a blog before with my top 43 but as anyone who knows me will know my music taste is an actual mess and changes on an hourly basis. Things have changed.

Obviously, doing it by semi-final makes it a bit awkward for the big six, so I'll rank these quickly here now. For the sake of this blog, as there are six songs, I won't link the videos this time although obviously can post them in the comments if anyone really wants them.

6TH PLACE - FRANCE
Song: Madame Monsieur - "Mercy"
Overall Rank: 31/43

This is okay I guess? I like the message behind it, and everything is fairly nice, but there's just something about it that doesn't click with me at all. Not really sure what it is but it's there and it's stopping me from liking this as much as I probably should. That said, I wouldn't be all that mad if it won (and I think it might)!

5TH PLACE - SPAIN
Song: Alfred & Amaia - "Tu canción"
Overall Rank: 30/43

Just beating France to avoid the last place, Spain is another song that's okay. Alfred needs to do something about his facial expressions because they're super off-putting, and the song is ~probably~ definitely too nauseatingly sweet for its own good, but it's a fairly nice song that'll have its fans. Benefits from being less hyped outside of Spain for me maybe.

4TH PLACE - Germany
Song: Michael Schulte - "You Let Me Walk Alone"
Overall Rank: 25/43

I used to like this a lot more than I do. Joins France and Spain in the "okay" club, I mean it's pretty cute but it's become a bit stale. Not really a lot else to say, can maybe see this surprising on the night though.

3RD PLACE - UNITED KINGDOM
Song: Surie - "Storm"
Overall Rank: 18/43

Not necessarily bias but the small amounts of exposure this has been given here have definitely helped this. Initially thought this was really, really bland and well, it's still really bland, but Surie is such an icon and the song is irritatingly catchy and generally fairly likeable. I can't see this doing much better than last but hey it gives us something to complain about it because it's ALL POLITICAL.

2ND PLACE - PORTUGAL
Song: Cláudia Pascoal - "O Jardim"
Overall Rank: 15/43

This has been a slow burner for me. I've always kind of liked it, and as far as I can remember it's always been around 11th-20th which is good for my standards because welp what an unstable mess. I really love the meaning and emotion behind this, it never really blows me away but it's such a nice listen.

1ST PLACE - ITALY
Song: Ermal Meta & Fabrizio Moro - "Non mi avete fatto niente"
Overall Rank: 11/43

Those vocals on any other sort of song would make me shudder every time but it really, really works with a song like this. I've said from the start that I think this could surprise, it's been a bit overlooked but it's great. I think the lack of exposure after the first rehearsals has stopped this from being in my top 10 as I literally bumped it out today lol, but it's still good!
