amt week 5 results

Jan 19, 2021 by Absol
Good evening, DJs! This week, I challenged you all to put your (or more accurately, your artist's) penmanship to the test and send me some songs with icy verses and fiery bars. Let's see how you all did! :3 I will say that this week was easily the best I've gotten so far, almost everyone sent something I REALLY liked, so even if you didn't get a HIGH placement this week, you probably sent something impressive.

I'll start with our ten-word safe critiques, as usual:

TheGoodMan - City Girls, Doja Cat - Pussy Talk - english spanish and french. funniest hook of all time

turkeylover - Flo Milli - Beef FloMix - such an iconic debut, constantly stuck in my head

tbrown_47 - Tupac - Can't C Me - love the banshee-sounding sample. nice verses. tupac is alive.

@judi - Kendrick Lamar - Swimming Pools (Drank) - wasn't sure how you'd approach this theme. you did good

michelleobama - Lil Kim - Aunt Dot - went over surprisingly well, legendary concept, edited vocals were :/

So, this week, we still have 8 of you on stage, but honestly... I've decided that I want to do FIVE HIGHS and THREE LOWS this week because most of you really nailed it. Let's get to work.

HighNoon - RuPaul - The one about the interest in trans women - I honestly don't wanna write anything about this you knew you were trolling here. I guess I respect the attempt at making a joke at my expense but... it was about as funny as the song itself.

AlexaVonTrayne - Megan Thee Stallion - Captain Hook - Yeah... yeah. Anyone who says Megan has one flow should be arrested for treason cuz she fucking SPITS on this track. I kind of like the sample for this song, the bass hits really nice, but honestly the first verse is really where the song takes off and she really doesn't let up. The line about having a curved dick and hitting the pussy with an uppercut is never not funny. The hook is really catchy, it sticks in my head, uhm, the second verse is honestly all around really a serve. The line about getting head but no guarantees on penetration is really funny imagining her just curving some dude after he eats her out is a laugh, also when she says "I'm a rapper not a model"... I mean everything here is really iconic. Look at the material.

HowLovely - Tkay Maidza, JPEGMAFIA - Awake - Well, I guess beginning with the song concept here... duh. Imagine not being awake 24/7. The last time I felt tired was... I dunno? Bartending in the 80's? Anyways getting into the actual song, the hook is great, first of all. It's a little like repetitive but that works as a positive if anything. The beat is super weird and creepy and fits the song concept well, uhm, and I mean the verses are just pure gold. The wristband line, the whiplash line, the David/Goliath comparison (completely true. everything she's saying is totally true), I mean... nothing misses. The Peggy verse is great too, the snuff films line, the tagging line where he flips it and makes the joke about playing tag with a handgun... excuse the pun but it's honestly killer. It's crazy to think that she made this song and still has songs that go even harder. Also I do wanna give the bridge a little shout-out I like that part too. I kind of like everything here. Amazing. Amazing.

ItsAustin - Nicki Minaj - Mercy - I like this verse a lot for the most part. uhm, but why not send a whole song? Nicki has great songs wall-to-wall, so I feel like sending a verse when people were coming out with the best songs possible was a mistake. Even the full Lil Wayne song would've been a pretty good submission. I honestly don't even hate this I just wish you sent a full song. That being said, I do like a lot of these lines, the milkshake line is really funny, also "if you eat ass I got a thick plate" had me doubled over laughing. I also like the speedy part in the middle, uhm, I guess the only lyric that's a little weird for me on this is when she's like "I'm a republican voting for Mitt Romney"??? I think it's a joke because of the following line, but it's like... kind of a code switch LMAO. Either way this was good I just think you kind of got outbarred since you just sent a verse.

KingGeek - Kari Faux - StickUp! - C'mon... you didn't have to go THIS hard with an entrance song. I think you have an unfair advantage having this much taste and also knowing so much about the kinds of music I like, which is why I was fine with you showing up at episode 5. Not any girl can just come in here and turn it into a stick-up and have it work out. Anyways, this Kari song is maybe my favorite she's ever done? She has a lot of really cold verses on this EP alone, but this is definitely the best. I love the hook on this song, the outro with the guitar is amazing, but the standout lines are just... everywhere. The line about the red carpet and kool-aid stains is equal parts funny and really dark at the same time. "I'm on your ass like the back of your jeans" is really funny, but I think that final 4 about doing the math, doing it proper, got the solution and you are the problem, and then "she was playing with my money your honor"... genius. Actually a lyrical genius. Love her sm love you for sending this sm I could talk about Kari Faux all day but this is a live show. We have to move on to the rest of the songs ;w;

Nalia - Shamir - On The Regular - You were another girl I was worried about, but then you came through with this. I knew Shamir from some of their other stuff, and I was really feeling this instrumental, so I was optimistic, and this is honestly really really cute. I think you took a different direction than a lot of people and it really hit right. I think this was just such a fun submission but the bars are still really clean. The hook is honestly my fave part, the movie/sequel line is cool, and it's very uplifting and takes down the haters. I like the line about wanting a guitar before he wanted a bike, the line about being so ill you can call him cancer... a lot of it is really funny. I think this was a good direction to take, it still felt very you and worked really well with something I could vibe with.

cheritaisdelicious - Run The Jewels - Early - Well... I know a lot of RTJ's newer stuff, so I figured this would be good but... I was really in for a ride here. I think this is maybe already my favorite song by them? (small detour to say walking in the snow is also a hit) I think this did such a good job at painting the picture of police violence and white silence in America, and I don't think it's necessarily ahead of it's time- obvously this has been an ongoing issue but I think it's probably one of the best examples of art that really reflects and addresses the issue well. I don't really even know where to start with lyrics I like, I think Killer Mike has insane storytelling ability and it's hard to point to a specific line on that verse because it's all very interconnected, but I think the best line is probably where he references the little boy screaming as his mother is killed... I get chills every time and I've relistened like 5 times already. The El-P verse is also really good, the way it really addresses the numbness that a lot of people are experiencing because it's just such a consistent issue... I dunno. It's definitely a difficult topic but I think they do a good job of discussing it and there's probably a point you can relate to no matter who you are. Simply put, this is one of the jewels they've been running this whole time.  Wild.

mathboy9 - Mobb Deep - Shook Ones, Pt. II - I like this, it's pretty classic 90s east-coast hip-hop, but I think I just didn't have a big point of relation with this group specifically. I do appreciate the themes they address, it does have a lot of similarities to the RTJ song, and it's very grimy, but the sound doesn't click as well for me. I think the idea of a "shook one" and it being the situation, not the individual, is a good point to make, but it feels like they lose the plot sometimes and go through a few different song concepts, which isn't exactly bad, it just kind of loses points for me. I will say I liked the featherweight/levitate rhyme, the song about feeling guilt for things you've done and wondering if they deserve to live... stuff like that stands out to me. I just think when everyone was on their a-game this week, this wasn't exactly enough.

So... that was a lot of writing, but now it's time to crown a winner for this week! Who will take it between our top 5?

AlexaVonTrayne, this song hit MY pussy with an uppercut. You're safe. Ah.

KingGeek, you were resting on your laurels just a bit, but I was still unequipped to prepare for this stick-up. You're safe.

HowLovely, this song makes me want to do coke so I don't sleep ever again. You're safe.

Between Nalia and Cherita, you took very different approaches and still managed to impress, while sticking with your own individual style. Our winner is...
