amt week 2 results

6thJan 13, 2021 by Absol
Hey gals! It's another results show of AMT. I really should have tried to think of a better acronym for this show, but AMT isn't the worst. Oh well. Hindsight is 20/20. Hey, that reminds me, I should probably get into the scoring! Some of y'all got a 20/20 this week, in a sense.

Again, I'll be starting with our ten-word critiques for the safe DJs (there aren't quite as many, as there's 5 tops and 5 bottoms this week :3)

HighNoon - Cibo Motto - Sugar Water - took me a couple listens but i really like it
turkeylover - Bree Runway, Missy Elliott - ATM - there are better bree runway songs. still great tho
Becksta20 - Dua Lipa, Madonna, Missy Elliott - Levitating - i prefer the original but this is alright
cheritaisdelicious - Vicktor Taiwo, Solomon - Digital Kids - huge step up from last week
nalia - Lion Babe - Stressed Out - love her and this is pretty alright
tbrown_47 - Remi Wolf - Woo! - her and this video hella weird... amazing
pinkiepie512 - Rihanna - Needed Me - one of her best, but a little expected

Everyone else... you're the tops and bottoms. I'm all business this week so let's get into it.

AlexaVonTrayne - Uhm Jung Hwa, Jung Ryeo Won - Photographer - You were the first to submit and you REALLY set the bar here. You were right when you said you'd be shocked if I didn't like this... the bassline is unreal and I really really love how intense this instrumental is despite being very dark and vibe-y. Also you kind of knew your demographic with sending me a song with 20k views on youtube... lmao. I don't know how to describe why I like this so much but I think I mentioned that the melody gave me kind of When I Grow Up vibes with the downward scale at the end of her lines... this was very chaotic but checked all my boxes. Also the spoken-word English part after the first chorus is pretty cool, I like that I can still get the point of the song despite not understanding anything else. This week was a HUGE W for you, but was it the winning submission? Secret. :3

Kmartt - Blind Melon - No Rain - Oh... yeah, I wasn't in love with this. I think we have VERY different tastes. I think the only thing I really like here is the song concept, but the instrumental is so flat and basic... and the performance is like, meh. I don't really like the lead singer's voice at all. I definitely SEE where you were coming from when you said this song is pretty quirky, it definitely is, but when I said I like quirky/weird music I didn't mean quirky in terms of song concept, I meant more the sound... I dunno. This sound just didn't hit for me at all. Sorry =L.

HowLovely - 015B, Jane Jang - Camellia Flower - I was kind of conflicted on this, there's parts I like and parts I don't like. The intro with the heavy bass and the more electric guitar is really good, but once the vocals hit it kind of falls off. Her vocals are fine, but it's really just the guitars carrying at that point and it doesn't do a lot for me. Don't get me wrong here, either- I still like what it's doing for the most part, there's some really nice melodies and the warbly guitar coming back in hits really nice, but there's some parts that don't hit for me and for a week where the GOAL was pandering, you just didn't hit the standard that a lot of people did.

ItsAustin - Yung Baby Tate - Orange - I mean... you must have known this is one of my favorite songs ever, right? Like this wasn't a coincidence, hoe. I think this was a little expected for absolcore week, but I did ask you to pander. The instrumental of vocals layered over the reaaaaaaaaaaally dreamy synths... I mean it's just amazing on all levels. I'm getting chills relistening to this for like, the 900th time. It'll never get old. This is the song that made me fall in LOVE with this girl, god. The chorus just hits me like a ton of bricks... I want her to smuggle me wherever she's fucking going. Also she rhymed orange with foreign and important. Good for her. Take this 10/10 and get out of my face!!! I'm not crying, you're crying!!! Can someone get my nail that just fucking fell off??!?!?!?

TheGoodMan - Arca, Rosalia - KLK - This is another submission where I feel like you kind of knew exactly what you were doing. I think the like RISKY pick off this album would have been Watch, but this was pretty much an instant classic when it dropped. All my homies stan Arca and Rosalia. I don't know what fucking drugs Arca was on making this, but good for her. She should do those drugs every day. I don't even know what Rosalia isn't saying but... I agree with her. The horn samples are just so chaotic I really can't deal. This was definitely on the more extra side of my tastes, and it's not a route a lot of people went down, so I think you get a lot of bonus points for that. This was just overall an excellent choice, but I'm sure you knew that already. Amazing work.

MichelleObama - Dounia - F.ck Me Eyes - So, I AM a Dounia fan as well, but I didn't know this song going into it (she's very new and I tend to miss releases until an album drops, I'm real slow like that). I was expecting at least something passable, but this is delicious. This is definitely one of her best. I dunno what the instrument that leads the song off is, I assume it's some sort of synth, but whatever it is I love it. Once the bass kicks in on the back half too... it was over. I was sold. I also love the other little instrument at the breakdown I can't describe? I think it's probably also a synth but it's got a very nice tropical and relaxing vibe... the instrumentation is so good I could go on all day, but I should also talk about her voice and the lyrics. I kind of LOVE the lyrics of "no i'm not high i just kinda got those fuck me eyes..." can't say I relate cuz if I got some fuck me eyes... I'm probably off it. lmao. Anyways this was great I'm gonna be bumping this until I'm dead.

Judi - Melanie Martinez - The Bakery - I'm a little conflicted on this submission as well. The instrumental is fine, I think the flow is catchy and her performance is alright. I think the lyrics are a little weaker than Melanie usually gives us, and I wasn't a huge fan of the EP this is off of in general, I was really about Cry Baby when it came out and K-12 had some good moments. I don't know what really gave you the idea to send this, it doesn't feel like something I would go crazy over. I definitely don't hate it or anything - a lot of these submissions were pretty good for the most part, I just think this was a little weak and a little off the mark. Nothing really stood out musically. She do look good tho.

Heavenlee - Bishop Briggs - The River - Hmm... I was pretty nervous for you when I saw Bishop Briggs, honestly. I probably come across really pretentious with this incoming take, but she doesn't do a lot for me. She gives me really by-the-numbers indie from what I know of her, which is fine. I actually do like this song to an extent, the chorus DOES bang, and I love her voice, it's just not really a surprising or fun instrumental, IMO. It's just the big drum-hits and bass, and the clapping/background vocals get a little old, it's something I've seen done tons of times. I think it's a well executed song, and it's a lil nasty, but it's just not really my jush. I feel bad because I do think she is very talented, she just doesn't make music for girls like me, really. I think if she took more instrumental risks I could really get into her, but until then... eh.

mathboy9 - 070 Shake - Guilty Conscience - Well... yeah. You knew what you were doing with this one. I love this song and her album has a lot of bright spots on it, this being one of the biggest. I looooooooooove the synth line here a lot, it's so lovely, especially once that chorus hits. The entire performance is amazing, too. I really don't know what else to say, I really like how the song builds, and the song concept is just super amazing... she really didn't miss. I dunno. This is my last write-up so I'm getting shleepy sorry if this is comparatively short but you know your ass was on it this week.

So... we're also missing iSandeh's submission and I'm gonna go ahead and eliminate her. Despite this, I'm going to be eliminating someone else as well this week, but first, I'd like to start with our winner reveal.

ItsAustin, I wanna bite into this submission like an orange. You're safe.

TheGoodMan, Miss Venezuela and Miss Spain helped you do North Macedonia proud this week. You're safe.

mathboy9, the karma you're waiting on isn't coming to get you... at least not yet. You're safe.

Between AlexaVonTrayne and MichelleObama, you both sent songs I hadn't heard before and still managed to blow me away and pander to my snobby sensibilities, but only one of you can win. Our winner is...

Michelle Obama, good work as well. You're safe.

Now, for the bottoms of the week.

Heavenlee, this song didn't quite have me running like a river, but you still had your heart in the right place. You're safe.

HowLovely, I can't think of a good pun for your song but you're safe.

Between Judi and Kmartt, I've chosen to eliminate one of you...

Kmartt, I'm sorry, but this ends your time here. I feel like we really don't have much in common when it comes to music. :(

Judi, you're safe, but please step it up next week!! I know you can come through with the hits.

That leaves us with 15 DJs remaining... I'll try to think up a theme and get an episode posted tomorrow! We're on such a good pace. I'm happy for us. Goodnight.
